Between each vertebra in your spine sits a spinal disc — a soft, gel-filled cushion that absorbs shock and allows flexible movement. A herniated disc occurs when the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) cracks or tears, allowing the soft inner gel (nucleus pulposus) to push outward. A bulging disc is similar but the outer layer remains intact while the disc wall bulges outward beyond its normal boundary.
