Between each vertebra in your spine sits a spinal disc — a soft, gel-filled cushion that absorbs shock and allows flexible movement. A herniated disc occurs when the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) cracks or tears, allowing the soft inner gel (nucleus pulposus) to push outward. A bulging disc is similar but the outer layer remains intact while the disc wall bulges outward beyond its normal boundary. In both cases, the displaced disc material can press directly against nearby spinal nerves or the spinal cord itself, causing significant pain, weakness, and neurological symptoms. Herniated and bulging discs most commonly occur in the lumbar spine (lower back) and cervical spine (neck), though they can happen anywhere along the spine.
A herniated disc does not get better on its own the longer it's left untreated — it gets worse. Over time, the disc material can calcify, the nerve damage can become chronic, and the surrounding muscles develop compensatory patterns that create additional problems. Patients who delay treatment often require longer, more intensive care to achieve the same results. Early decompression therapy can significantly reduce the time to recovery, prevent permanent nerve damage, and in many cases eliminate the need for surgery entirely.
